JOHOR BARU: The appointment of 28 people to a panel of experts (POE) under the Local Government Development Ministry is to ensure government policies that are holistic, says Deputy Minister Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir.

He said those involved have expertise and experience beneficial to the ministry especially in dealing with issues.

“The appointment of a POE is not something new; it has been done before, and the ministry cannot work in silos.

“For example, when we talk about housing development, it will also involve waste management, which is why we need the experts to get their views on how we handle things,” he told reporters after a Back to School Aid Programme at Dewan Flat Larkin here on Sunday (March 26).

The Johor Baru MP had been asked to comment on whether or not the number of appointees was excessive.

“They are from various backgrounds, some former private sector or government officials, as well as smart city and sustainability experts.

“In terms of commitment, they are not paid, and the ministry only wants their views on matters that impact the public,” he said, adding that the panel's input would add value to the government's initiatives.

On Thursday (March 23), The Star reported that a panel of 28 experts from diverse backgrounds had been appointed by the ministry to advise it on programmes and policies geared towards enhancing urban environments and cities.

Minister Nga Kor Ming said the appointment was a strategic initiative to gather the knowledge, experience and expertise necessary to formulate the best initiatives.

The panel, led by former Public Service Department director-general Tan Sri Khairul Adib Abd Rahman, will serve on a pro bono basis.
